We are often asked if certain plants are toxic to plants. It is important to know that ingesting almost any plant can cause some GI upset, even if it is not necessarily toxic.

The following is a list of SOME of the plants that are considered toxic. For a more complete list visit – https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

  • Lilies – (highly toxic to cats)
  • Cannabis
  • Sago Palm – (the seeds or “nuts” of this plant are especially toxic)
  • Tulip – (the bulbs of tulips are very toxic to pets)
  • Azalea/Rhododendron
  • Oleander
  • Castor Bean
  • Cyclamen
  • Kalanchoe
  • Yew
  • Amaryllis
  • Autumn Crocus
  • Chrysanthemum
  • English Ivy
  • Peace Lily
  • Pothos
  • Schefflera

Toxicity will often depend on the plant and how much of the plant is eaten. With lilies, even very small amounts can cause severe kidney damage in cats. In the event of any plant ingestion, it is recommended to contact a poison control resource as soon as possible. You can contact your veterinarian or the APCC 24 hour emergency hotline at 1-888-426-4435.
